Couples who run together…
At The Runners Hub, we’re lucky to have an incredible community of runners, each with their own unique stories and motivations. From time to time, we love diving deeper into their journeys, and this time, we’re doing something a little different.
We turned the spotlight on the couples who run with us—because let’s be honest, nothing tests a relationship quite like a shared love (or rivalry) for running! We wanted to know what drives them, how they support each other, and just how competitive things really get.
To keep things fun, we asked each of them the same set of questions—without letting them see their partner’s answers. The results? Well, you’ll have to read on to find out!
Viv & Cody
For nearly a decade, Cody and Viv have shared miles and memories, with Viv leading the way. While running brought them together, their styles couldn’t be more different—she’s dedicated, while he runs mostly for the post-run feast!
Their friendly rivalry sparks playful frustration, especially when Cody wins races with minimal training. But their support for each other runs deep, from Viv’s half marathon dedication to Cody’s strong race finishes. Whether side by side or pushing each other from afar, running remains a special part of their journey together.
How long have you been running together?
Cody: Viv and I have been together for 9.5 years and been running since we first started dating!
Viv: We first started running together before we were dating in 2015 - I'd say bang on 10 years ago!!
Do you remember the very first run you took together?
Cody: (I think) it was when Viv would run over from her parent’s house to my parent's house and we would run together from there.
Viv: I do remember! We met out the front of my parents' house and ran around Kew.
Did running bring you together, or was it a case of "if you can't beat them, join them". Who initiated it?
Cody: Viv initiated it as she is the runner and it definitely brought us together as we would always exercise together.
Viv: Hmmm I'd say it was mostly Cody wanting to be able to compete and keep up with me!
How would you describe your partner's relationship with running?
Cody: Viv is extremely dedicated to her running and there is nothing more she enjoys more than going to run club on a Tuesday and Thursday and going for a long run along Beach Road on a weekend.
Viv: Cody does NOT like running! He knows it's good for him so does it out of necessity only! (And so he has an excuse to eat more for the rest of the day)
Describe any "friendly" rivalry you have between you both. Has there ever been any friction caused by running in any way….?
Cody: I would not describe myself as a runner but Viv gets very annoyed if I beat her in a park run!
Viv: Definitely! Any time there is a race that we both enter I will train for months and Cody will maybe do a practice run or two. Lo and behold... he wins every time.
Describe the proudest moment you felt towards your partner (running related)?
Cody: When Viv committed to training for a half marathon during COVID and completed it!
Viv: The half marathon we first did together. Cody did so well running through the heat and pulled away from me for a very fast finish!
How well does your partner take on running advice from you…?
Cody: Not well and I don’t try to give her advice either
Vivienne: Cody takes on advice much better than I would... luckily he doesn't try to give me any!
